PrimeSoft's first piece of business came about in a funny way, says Khandavalli. "A software engineer came to us and said, 'OK, guys, listen up. I have a contracting position at Delta Airlines in Atlanta, and they're going to pay me an hour, but I need a corporate entity to do it. Now that you have a company, why don't you take the contract from Delta for an hour and give me all of the .' Before he finished, I said, 'I'll do it.'" A landlord evicted Morin's company, Computers Plus, last week.
from a space at 237 Commerce St. in Williston.
Computers Plus was evicted from the space at the end of March after a long dispute. Morin says the trouble began after pipes burst and caused what he estimates was ,000 worth of damage to equipment at his repair and sales business. He admits he stopped paying rent, but says this was only because he couldn't obtain compensation from his landlord or his landlord's insurance company. ... A Chittenden Superior Court judge ordered Morin to pay his landlord ,737 in back rent and attorneys' fees. He also was ordered out of the property. Morin says he tried to move out of his space in a timely fashion after receiving a legal notice ordering him to do so, but a marshal overseeing the eviction prevented his employees from clearing out the last of the equipment. (He had succeeded in getting any remaining valuable stuff out.)
Burlington city buildings and schools are wired.
The city announced Thursday the nearly completed installation of 17 miles of underground and aerial cable that will provide high-speed Internet and data access. Burlington schools' computers are connected to the network, said Tim Nulty, a consultant hired by the city to run the project. City computers will be connected in the coming weeks.
The schools were linked up first to prepare for the start of the school year. The schools provided their own equipment to take advantage of the city-built network, Nulty said.
... The City Council in January approved spending up to .6 million on the project. Burlington has spent almost ,000 on the network, including cable installation throughout the city and acquiring data equipment, Nulty said.
Burlington High School Principal Amy Mellencamp said the high-speed network will expand education opportunities for students throughout the city's schools. Students will have access to classes that were previously unavailable. Teachers will maintain Web sites about their classes, Mellencamp said.
When the city hooks into the network, a city employee will have desktop access to databases they previously would have had to get on paper, Nulty said.

David Krueger cruised the Vermont Pink Slip Party on Tuesday
Tuesday at a Winooski restaurant, a networking event for laid-off IBM workers. He needed a job, but like the others at the gathering, he was unwilling to settle for something that didn't equal his degree and his passion for computer engineering. ... When IBM handed out layoff notices to 501 employees at its Essex Junction plant Nov. 28, the workers were thrust into a job market squeezed by a recession and rising unemployment rates.
Four months later, even with hints of an economic rebound, many still find it difficult to land the jobs that match the pay and challenges they found at IBM or at some of the other companies that let go workers. ... On Feb. 1, 475 of the 501 engineers, designers, technicians and other mid-level professionals who had received notices in November left the company.
DSL could also mean "Darn Stupid Line".
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service was supposed to provide consumers with a ticket to high-speed heaven. For many users, it's become a fast trip to hell.
Complaints of long waits for the service to be activated, terrible technical support, and erratic and unstable connections litter the comp.dcom.xdsl newsgroup and account for a large share of the postings on dslreports.com.
Downloading data over a DSL connection is anywhere from eight to 100 times faster than downloading with dial-up modems, depending on the level of DSL service a user selects. Basic DSL costs about US a month, while a standard dial-up account costs less than half that.
Despite its problems, DSL remains poised to become the high-speed access of choice, having surpassed ISDN among home users a few years back.

Metacraft Internet Services

Metacraft provides direct, one-to-one contact with each client, ensuring they receive the necessary support to be successful in their online efforts.
Once in a great while, service gets a lot better for certain customers even though it doesn't cost them any more than before.
The customers in question are members of the University of Vermont community who live in Burlington, who subscribe to Burlington Telecom, and who occasionally tap into the UVM network when they work from their computers at home.
... About four weeks ago, Burlington Telecom made a direct connection between its network and UVM's network. That meant that transmissions could travel straight from a Burlington computer user to UVM -- without taking what had been the customary, enormous detour they used to take.
That detour went through Boston or Albany. Before the new connection, a Burlington customer's e-mail, say, would have had to travel to one of those places and then back to UVM -- passing through 14 or 15 "hops." As H. David Todd, UVM's chief information officer, explains it, that's 14 or 15 pieces of equipment that an information packet has to go through before it reaches its destination. The more hops, the longer the transmission takes.

Police are turning to computers for evidence.
Police officers accustomed to scouring crime scenes for fingerprints or questioning witnesses for clues are being trained in a new crime-solving technique -- how to search personal computers for evidence.
Police are using computer evidence in a growing number of cases in Vermont, including many cases not commonly perceived as high-tech crimes. What was once primarily a tool for catching child pornographers has spread to more traditional investigations.
Computers can turn up evidence in domestic assaults, drug stings and homicides, police and computer forensic experts said. In a domestic assault case, for example, a boyfriend might send his girlfriend an instant message threatening her if she goes to the police. Drug dealers often keep encrypted financial records. Homicides might be plotted through e-mail. Or, as was the case with the murders of two Dartmouth professors last year, the killers bought the murder weapons over the Internet.
Richard Tarrant will step down as chief executive of IDX Systems
Corp. after 33 years at the helm of the high-tech company in South Burlington he helped found. Tarrant will continue to work full-time at the company.
The chief operating officer and president, James Crook Jr., will become the new leader Jan. 1. Tarrant will remain as chairman of the company's board of directors. Normally board chairmen hire company executives and guide them on business strategy on a monthly basis, but Tarrant promised to be there every day.
"I will still be full-time and fully engaged," Tarrant said Tuesday.
Tarrant has been grooming Crook since Crook took over as president in 1999. This title change means "the buck will stop at Jim's desk," said Tarrant, 60.
Sensitive data is being stripped from state Web sites.
Until recently, people with access to the Internet could call up information that told them the locations of public drinking water
sources.
An FBI warning last week prompted the state to take that information off the Internet out of fear that terrorists would misuse the
data.
The move was one example among many nationally since Sept. 11 in which public officials are reassessing what information they offer the public that could be exploited by terrorists.
The state Natural Resources Agency removed the information on water sources Friday. The state received an e-mail warning
that day from the FBI about "uncorroborated information" that terrorists might be using government Web sites to find information
on public infrastructure such as water supplies, dams, and nuclear and gas facilities.
There is no indication of a specific threat to Vermont, said Elizabeth Hunt of the water supply division.

When demand is down, cost cutting measures must be
introduced. On Monday, 500 workers at IBM's plant in Essex Junction learned that lesson the hard way when they found out their jobs had been eliminated.
"I can't say that it's the end in my mind," Economist Jeff Carr told Channel 3. Carr says IBM is being hit twice, weak demand for chips and increased competition from overseas companies where production costs are cheaper. "A lot of the equipment that was made and invested in around Y2K is now wearing out and so just the replacement activity is not necessarily being serviced by domestic producers like IBM."
On Monday, company spokesman Jeff Couture said Big Blue cut 600 jobs across the country, leaving many wondering why the majority came in Vermont. "We have an in-place manufacturing facility with overhead built in and without the work coming in especially we needed to cut costs and operations that go into that," he said.
Which is Faster, AOL or PowerLink?
When I first got Adelphia broadband cable Internet access, the answer seemed obvious. PowerLink was the hottest thing around, and brand-new. A cable technician came out and installed the stuff for me. I found web pages downloading instantly. The service was up better than 95% of the time, 24 hours a day, every day. Sometimes I wondered if it would not be an exaggeration to say they were up 99% of the time, and I didn’t ever get kicked off, unless there were cable problems, and then there is no cable TV, either.
During September and October the answer hasn’t seemed so obvious. There were two weeks during October that I could not get on the web at all during the afternoon or evening, but had great service after midnight. During the latter part of the day I would have been better off surfing the web with AOL and the 56k modem in my notebook. Pulling up any web page became impossible at times. I started to consider getting AOL as a back up Internet provider for a while.
